the driving scene where travis remembers why he bought the land in paris texas (36m39s approx), was filmed in kramer junction, ca.,-117.5415503,3a,75y,341.73h,92.93t,0r/data=!3m7!1e1!3m5!1saOp19vY0fyBF1-F6Rw-vlg!2e0!5s20111001T000000!7i13312!8i6656

the eating mcdonalds in the back of the ranchero under the freeway scene (approx 1hr17m50sec) was filmed at the 5/14 fwy interchange in sylmar, ca. the freeway overpasses look different today because the original ones were destroyed in the 1994 northridge earthquake.,-118.5083359,3a,75y,10.16h,97.12t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1siU6SUXrHXaEahCB6X5Ppdw!2e0!7i16384!8i8192

Was hoping to see the opening scene with Harry Dean Stanton walking in the desert. I’m pretty darn sure it’s not Texas, looks like Arizona.

In response to Skotos khrodos, I believe I found the exact location of the opening scene with Harry Dean Stanton walking in the desert:
      29°35’05.3″N 103°44’01.4″W
      (Terlingua, Texas)

BTW, a ranch which includes this specific desert area (pink bluffs/buttes) is located is being sold for $10 million; you can see the opening desert scene on the realtor promotional video currently on Youtube: (see 1:02 of video)

You can also see a variety of other filming locations from the movie on a google map I generated:

My last comments suggest that Travis would have taken approximately 5 hours walking from opening desert scene to the bar where he passes out. No wonder he fainted!

Just wanted to add to my previous comments: the bar where Travis passes out was called the Camel bar. Exact location was: 29.584893, -103.557995.
The bar was knocked down some years back.
On this site the empty water tank which Travis attempts to drink from appears to be one of the only visible artifacts remaining. Also the stanchions in front of the old gas pump still remain.
