the part in the movie where the car was on fire was filmed on the 219 southern terr. Expressway in the town of Boston N.Y. They set up for that shot on top of the rice rd. exit bridge. I know I lived there 1.8 th mile from the bridge.
State police almost wouldn’t let me Off there to get home. I lived on west hill rd. just behind where they were filming that evening. On the bridge there were trailers and cameras set up with two cars they used, one burnt up and the other looking like nothing happened to it.

The actual filming of them driving the wrong way and the car on fire that’s shown in the film was done on Hwy. 198, between Hanford and Lemoore in central California.
Hughes refilmed this scene here after test screenings didn’t react well to the original version. Instead of going through the expense of filming at the original location again, he found that Hwy. 198 looked very similar, and is only 125 miles north of Hollywood.
I remember Candy, Martin, Hughes, and crew staying at the downtown Raddison Hotel in Visalia, CA, my hometown, which is about fifteen miles east of the filming location.
I also remember driving through the filming area during that week. There was plenty of fake snow along the highway (it doesn’t snow here), and stories in the local newspapers about the filming during that time.

Nobody seems to recognize where the ride in the back of the truck was. I know where because it was filmed in front of my house. Geauga county Ohio is never recognized but now you know that part of this movie was filmed in East Claridon Ohio.

Train scene breakdown is between South Dayton and Cherry Creek NY on the same rail line used previously. It was and still operated by Bob Dinghman of the New York and Lake Erie Railroad Company. John Candys laugh in movie is that of another person actually. I believe John Hughes was in the Olympia Restaurant in Gowanda New York during filming and heard Mr. Raiport laughing in restaurant and wanted his voice dubbed over
